What the job is

On a superyacht, the drone operator flies aerial camera drones to film guests, the yacht and the places it visits. The drones are also used for practical work, such as scouting an anchorage, checking a beach landing or inspecting the mast and radar arch. On most yachts this is a combined post, mixing drone work with deck, AV/IT or photography duties. Dedicated operators are usually found on large charter yachts and expedition yachts, where owners want a constant record of the trip.

The flying is the visible part. The rest is planning and paperwork. You check airspace and local rules before every flight, register with the aviation authority where the yacht is cruising, and get permission near airports, ports and protected areas. Taking off from a moving deck and recovering onto it is a real skill. You often hand catch the drone or use the helideck or foredeck with a spotter from the deck team. You also look after lithium batteries, which are a fire risk.

Then comes the edit. Guests want a short film of their day by dinner, and owners want a cleaner cut at the end of the season. You shoot, grade and edit on board, usually in DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro, and keep the footage locked down, because privacy matters more than any shot. A good operator knows when not to fly: guests who want quiet, a neighbouring yacht with security, wind over the limit, or a no fly zone over a palace.

What makes a good one

  • Recovery onto a moving deck
  • Airspace and rules research
  • Cinematic camera work
  • Fast on board editing
  • Discretion with guest privacy

A day in the life

A yacht tender crossing turquoise water
A charter day, 70m motor yacht, Amalfi Coast
  1. 07:00Check the weather, wind at altitude and the drone map app for restrictions around Positano and the Li Galli islands. Confirm the day's plan with the captain at the morning meeting.
  2. 08:00Charge and inspect batteries, props and gimbals. Format cards and log the airframes you plan to use.
  3. 09:30Fly a sunrise style beauty shot of the yacht at anchor with the cliffs behind, with a deckhand spotting on the sundeck. Recover by hand catch on the aft deck.
  4. 11:00Join the tender run to a swimming cove and film the guests on the water toys from a safe height and distance. Keep clear of other boats and swimmers who are not in the party.
  5. 13:30Help the deck team with lunch on the aft deck and water toy wash down. Dump footage to the edit drive and back it up twice.
  6. 15:00Fly a short inspection of the radar arch and mast for the bosun, who wants to check an antenna mount without sending someone aloft.
  7. 17:00Cut a two minute film of the day with music and colour grading. Run it past the chief stewardess for any guests who asked not to appear.
  8. 19:00Fly a dusk shot as the yacht lights come on, if the wind and the guests allow. Otherwise stand by on deck for the evening.
  9. 21:30Screen the day's film on the aft deck cinema, then log flights, store batteries in their fire safe bags and plan tomorrow's location.

Questions crew ask

Will I only fly drones, or do I have to work on deck too?

On most yachts you will have a second job, usually deck, AV/IT or photography. Pure drone roles exist mainly on large charter and expedition yachts, and even then you help out when the flying is done.

Which drone licence do I need?

For the Mediterranean you need the EASA A2 CofC or its UK CAA equivalent, plus operator registration. If the yacht cruises the US or US Caribbean, an FAA Part 107 certificate is expected, and other countries such as Australia have their own rules you must check before flying.

Can I fly wherever the yacht goes?

No. Many ports, airports, national parks and areas such as Monaco have strict limits or outright bans. Part of the job is checking local rules every day and getting permission when it is needed.
