What the job is
A large charter yacht can carry more than a million euros of toys: jet skis, Seabobs, eFoils, a wakeboard boat, kayaks, paddleboards, an inflatable slide and a floating beach club. Someone has to own all of it. You are that person. You maintain each toy, keep the charging and fuel routines straight, and make sure everything is ready the moment a guest asks for it.
On guest days you are in the water as much as on deck. You brief guests, fit buoyancy aids, teach a nervous eight year old to ride a Seabob and coach an adult up onto an eFoil. You watch every rider, set safe zones away from swimmers and moored boats, and follow local rules on speed limits and distances from the beach, which change from Saint-Tropez to Sardinia.
Between charters the work is technical. You flush jet skis after every use, change impellers and spark plugs, track battery health on electric toys, repair inflatables and keep service logs the engineers and insurers can rely on. You work closely with the deck team and often help with tenders, mooring and washdowns. On smaller yachts this role is usually folded into a deckhand position.
What makes a good one
- Small engine and electric toy maintenance
- Clear safety briefings for all ages
- Confident in-water coaching
- Strong swimmer and boat handler
- Calm risk judgement around guests
A day in the life

- 06:30Check battery charge on the Seabobs and eFoils, top up jet ski fuel and inspect every toy for overnight damage.
- 07:30Help the deck team wash down, then launch the swim platform setup: slide, floating dock, kayaks and paddleboards.
- 09:30Guests come down after breakfast. Give a safety briefing, fit vests and run first jet ski rides behind the chase tender.
- 11:00Coach two teenagers on the eFoil, staying close in the water and calling them back from the swim zone boundary.
- 13:00Recover toys while guests have lunch, rinse them in fresh water and swap Seabob batteries.
- 15:00Run an afternoon tow session with wakeboard and inflatables from the tender, with a deckhand as spotter.
- 17:30Pack everything away before the yacht repositions. Flush jet ski engines and log hours, faults and battery cycles.
- 19:00Replace a cracked fin on a paddleboard and order spare impeller kits through the Bosun.
- 20:30Brief the Bosun on tomorrow's plan and local watersport rules at the next anchorage, then off watch.
Pay by country
Monthly salary for yachts of 50m to 100m. Larger yachts and strong mechanical skills pay at the top of the range. Charter tips are typically 5 to 15% of the charter fee, shared among crew, and can add significantly in a busy season.

Questions crew ask
Do I need watersports instructor qualifications to get hired?
Not always, but they help a lot. RYA PWC and Powerboat Level 2 are the minimum, and an instructor ticket or teaching background from a watersports centre makes your CV stand out.
Will I only work on water toys?
Rarely. On most yachts you are part of the deck team and help with washdowns, tenders and mooring, especially between charters.
How important are mechanical skills?
Very. Captains want someone who can service jet skis, diagnose electric toy faults and keep spares organised, not just someone who rides well.
