Yacht Delivery Captain

What the job is

You are hired to take a yacht from A to B. That might be Palma to Antibes before the season, Fort Lauderdale to St Maarten for winter charter, or a new build from the yard to its first berth. There are no guests. Your job is to plan the passage, pick or brief the crew, check the boat is fit to go, and bring it in safely, on schedule and without damage.

Most of the work happens before you leave the dock. You read the weather routing, check fuel range and bunkering stops, inspect safety gear, test steering, bilge pumps and nav electronics, and sort port clearances and crew paperwork. Many yachts you deliver are unfamiliar, sometimes poorly maintained, so you need the judgement to find faults early and the confidence to delay departure or refuse a boat that is not seaworthy.

At sea you run a small crew on a watch system, often three or four people. You stand watches yourself, navigate, handle radio traffic and make the calls on weather and diversions. When you arrive you clear in, hand over with a written report on defects and fuel used, and fly out. Work is irregular. Spring and autumn repositioning is busy, and good captains build steady work through managers and brokers.

What makes a good one

  • Passage planning and weather routing
  • Fast assessment of unfamiliar yachts
  • Leading small scratch crews
  • Practical engineering fault finding
  • Calm decision making at sea

A day in the life

Two crew at the wheelhouse on the bridge
A passage day, 34m motor yacht, Palma to Antibes
  1. 05:30Final weather check against the routing forecast for the Gulf of Lion. Mistral is easing, so you confirm a 06:30 departure.
  2. 06:00Engine room walkround with the mate: oil levels, coolant, sea strainers, fuel day tanks. Generators on and bridge electronics tested.
  3. 06:30Lines off. You take the yacht out of Port Adriano, set the autopilot on the planned route and brief the crew on the watch rota.
  4. 09:00Off watch, you update the passage plan and email the yacht manager an ETA and a short note on a sticking stabiliser fin.
  5. 12:00Back on watch. Log entry, fuel burn checked against range, VHF watch kept as you cross the shipping lanes north of Menorca.
  6. 15:30Engineer watch rounds find a weeping hose clamp on the port generator. You agree a fix and note it for the handover report.
  7. 19:00Crew dinner in the saloon, then a night watch briefing. Radar settings, traffic and rules for calling the captain are covered.
  8. 23:00Short sleep before your 02:00 watch. You expect to raise Cap d'Antibes after breakfast and clear in by 10:00.

Usually paid a day rate, roughly €400 to €900 a day depending on yacht size, distance and your ticket, plus flights, food and expenses. Figures below are monthly equivalents for a full month of delivery work on 24m to 50m yachts. No charter tips.

Questions crew ask

Can I do deliveries with just a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster?

Yes, on smaller yachts. Yachtmaster Offshore covers commercial work on yachts under 24m within 150 miles of a safe haven, and Ocean removes the distance limit. For larger yachts you need a Master (Yacht) ticket.

Do I find my own crew?

Often, yes. Owners and managers expect you to bring a mate and an engineer you trust, though some supply their own crew. A reliable contact list is part of what you are selling.

Who pays for flights and food?

The owner or manager normally covers your flights to and from the yacht, provisions on passage and port costs. Agree this, your day rate and any weather standby pay in writing before you travel.
