What the job is

A dedicated barista is a role you mostly find on yachts over 70m, where guests expect café standard coffee at any hour and the interior team is large enough to split service by speciality. You run the coffee station, usually a commercial espresso machine in the main pantry with a second set up on the sundeck bar, and you make sure every cup matches the guest preference sheet.

Coffee is the core but not the whole job. You build drinks to order: oat flat whites, iced lattes, matcha, fresh juices, smoothies and mocktails. You manage beans, milks and syrups, dial in grinders as the humidity changes, descale and backflush machines, and keep stock lists for the purser. Between rushes you help with breakfast, lunch set ups and turndown, because on board nobody is only one thing.

The role matters because guests notice coffee every day, often several times a day. A principal who gets the same perfect cortado at 07:00 in Sardinia and at 16:00 in St Barths remembers it. You work closely with the chief stew and head of service, learn guest habits fast, and stay calm and presentable on deck when ten orders land at once after a swim stop.

What makes a good one

  • Consistent espresso and milk texturing
  • Grinder calibration and machine upkeep
  • Remembering guest preferences
  • Calm service under pressure
  • General interior service and housekeeping

Questions crew ask

Do I need café experience to get hired as a yacht barista?

Yes, in practice. Captains and chief stews want at least one or two years behind a busy specialty coffee bar, and an SCA barista certificate helps you stand out.

Will I only make coffee on board?

No. Coffee is your speciality, but you will also help with breakfast, lunch and dinner service, housekeeping, laundry and turndown when the team needs it.

Are there many barista jobs in yachting?

Dedicated barista roles exist mainly on yachts over 70m, so they are fewer than general stew jobs. Many baristas join as a stew with strong coffee skills and grow into the role on board.
