What the job is

You are the guests' single point of contact for everything that is not food, drink or a clean cabin. You book the beach club in Mykonos, arrange the helicopter transfer from Nice, confirm the private guide in Dubrovnik and make sure the car is waiting at the quay. On large yachts with busy charter programmes, this role takes the planning load off the Chief Steward and Purser so service on deck stays sharp.

Most of the work happens on a laptop and a phone. You build preference sheets before guests arrive, write the daily itinerary card, and keep a live log of every request and booking. You work closely with the Captain on the cruising plan, with the Head Chef on dining ashore versus on board, and with the deck team on tender runs and water toys. Local agents and concierge contacts become your most useful tools.

You still wear interior uniform and step into service when it is busy, greeting guests at the passerelle, hosting dinner ashore or running drinks at sundowners. The job suits a senior steward with strong organisation, good languages and a calm manner under pressure. Guests notice when things go wrong, so the measure of success is that nothing ever does: every boat arrives, every table is held, every surprise lands on time.

What makes a good one

  • Detailed planning and logistics
  • Clear written and spoken English
  • Second or third language
  • Discretion with high profile guests
  • Calm problem solving under pressure

A day in the life

A steward carrying a tray of drinks
A charter day, 85m motor yacht, Costa Smeralda
  1. 07:00Check overnight messages from guests and agents, then print and lay out the day's itinerary cards in the main salon and each guest cabin.
  2. 08:00Morning briefing with the Purser, Chief Stewardess and Chief Officer to confirm tender times, lunch location and the evening plan.
  3. 09:30Chat with the principal guest over breakfast on the aft deck. They want a boutique visit in Porto Cervo and a table at a beach restaurant for twelve.
  4. 10:00Call the port agent and your restaurant contact, secure the booking, arrange a driver and confirm timings with the tender team.
  5. 12:30Go ashore with the guests, check them into the restaurant, settle the bill on the yacht account and keep the tender on standby.
  6. 15:00Back on board, update the guest preference sheet with what they ordered and enjoyed, then reconcile receipts for the Purser.
  7. 17:30Plan tomorrow: a birthday surprise means ordering flowers, a cake with the Pastry Chef and a fireworks permit request through the agent.
  8. 19:30Help the interior team with sundowners on the sundeck and brief guests on the morning anchorage and activities.
  9. 22:30Write the handover log, confirm the morning's bookings by email and set up the next day's itinerary before going off duty.

Questions crew ask

Can I go straight into this role from a land based concierge job?

Sometimes, on very large yachts that value hotel or private aviation concierge experience. Most captains still want at least a season or two on board as a steward first, plus your STCW and ENG1.

How is this different from a Purser?

The Purser runs the money, crew admin and yacht paperwork. You focus on the guest programme itself, the bookings, excursions and preferences, and usually report to the Purser or Interior Manager.

Will I still do service and housekeeping?

Yes, when the yacht is busy you step into service and greeting. You are rarely on cabin rotation, but you are part of the interior team and expected to help.
