What the job is

On a yacht of 60m or more, the interior team is large enough to split into housekeeping, laundry and service, and the Fourth Steward sits near the bottom of that structure. You are usually given one area at a time. You clean guest cabins to a five star hotel standard, turn down beds, press shirts, polish brightwork and lay tables. Much of the work happens out of sight, before guests wake and while they are ashore.

Most chief stewardesses rotate the junior interior through each area over a season, so you learn the whole operation. One week you might run the laundry, handling delicate fabrics, bed linen and uniform for 30 crew. The next you might work evening service on the aft deck, clearing plates and refilling glasses under the Second Steward's direction. The Fourth position is where a head of department finds out what a new crew member does best.

The role matters because a big interior only works if the basics are done perfectly every day. Charter hours are long, often 14 to 16 a day, with split shifts and early starts. In return you get a cabin, meals, travel and a salary with almost no living costs. Do the job well for a season or two and moving up to Third Steward is a normal next step.

What makes a good one

Questions crew ask

Can I get a Fourth Steward job with no yacht experience?

Yes, it is one of the most common first jobs for new interior crew on large yachts. Hotel, restaurant or private household experience helps a lot, as does a clean CV and a professional photo.

What is the difference between a Fourth and a Third Steward?

The Fourth is usually the most junior full-time interior role and does more laundry and cabin work. A Third Steward has a season or more behind them and is trusted with more guest service and some supervision of juniors.

How long before I can move up?

Most crew who perform well move to Third Steward after one or two seasons, sometimes on the same yacht. Adding WSET or PYA GUEST courses can help you step up sooner.
