Dual roles
Captain / Engineer
You run a smaller yacht as its legal master and keep its machinery working. You drive, navigate and manage the crew, then go below to service engines, generators and systems yourself.

What the job is
On yachts of roughly 24m to 40m there is often no room or budget for a separate engineer. The captain holds both jobs. You are the master in law, responsible for the vessel, the crew and every guest on board. You are also the person who changes the generator impeller, chases the fault in the watermaker and signs off the engine hours. Owners hire this role because they want one trusted person who knows the boat end to end.
The captain side covers passage planning, navigation, berthing, weather calls, crew management, budgets, port paperwork and talking to the owner or management company. The engineering side covers planned maintenance, daily engine room checks, fuel and oil management, black and grey water systems, air conditioning, tenders and toys. You will also deal with contractors in the yard and decide which jobs you do yourself and which go to a specialist.
Crews are small, usually three to six people, so you lean on a capable mate to take the wheel while you work below. The days are long during a trip, and the winter refit period is where your engineering skill saves the owner real money. You need to be calm with guests on the aft deck and comfortable with your hands in the bilge an hour later. It suits experienced skippers who came up through mixed deck and engine roles.
What makes a good one
- Safe boat handling and berthing
- Diesel engine and generator maintenance
- Fault finding on electrical systems
- Owner and crew management
- Budgeting and yard planning
A day in the life

- 06:30Engine room rounds before anyone else is up. Check oil and coolant levels, bilges, sea strainers and generator readings, and log them.
- 07:30Check the forecast and plan the move from Palma to a Cabrera anchorage. Brief the mate and deckhand on the route and the anchoring plan.
- 09:00Coffee with the owner on the aft deck to confirm the day. They want a swim stop before lunch and a quiet bay for the night.
- 10:00Lift the anchor, take the helm out of the bay and hand the watch to the mate once in open water. Go below to check temperatures and pressures under load.
- 12:00Anchor for lunch and swimming. Launch the tender and toys with the deckhand and keep an eye on the swell and other boats.
- 14:30The guest heads report a pump fault. Find a tripped breaker and a worn macerator, fit a spare and add the part to the order list.
- 17:00Reposition to the overnight anchorage, set the anchor alarm and run the watermaker while the generator has spare capacity.
- 19:00Update the logbook, fuel figures and maintenance records. Email the management company about a yard slot for next month.
- 22:30Final engine room check, confirm anchor watch arrangements with the mate and turn in.

Questions crew ask
Do I need a full engineering ticket as well as my master's licence?
Usually not. Most owners on yachts this size expect AEC 1 and 2 at minimum, and MEOL (Yacht) or Y4 will put you ahead and may be needed for larger or commercially coded boats. Check the flag and coding requirements for the specific vessel.
How big are the yachts that hire a Captain / Engineer?
Mostly 24m to 40m, often private yachts with light charter. Above that, the engine room workload and manning rules usually require a dedicated engineer.
Is the pay higher than a standard captain on the same size yacht?
Yes, typically by €500 to €1,500 a month. You are covering two salaries and saving the owner yard bills, and good candidates negotiate on that basis.
