What the job is

This is an interior post with a second skill bolted on. Most of your hours go on normal steward work: cabins, laundry, table service, drinks and keeping the guest areas spotless. On top of that you are the yacht's massage therapist. When guests want a treatment, you set up the massage room or a quiet spot on deck, give the session, then go straight back to the interior rota. Yachts in the 35m to 80m range hire this way because a full spa team does not fit.

The massage side is held to a shore spa standard. Guests have often just come from a five star resort and expect the same pressure, hygiene and discretion. You keep client records, check for medical conditions before each session, manage your oils and linen, and keep the treatment room clean and stocked. On charter you may give two or three treatments a day, each booked around lunch, tender runs and dinner service. The chief stew builds them into the rota with you.

Balancing both jobs is the hard part. You cannot leave cabins half finished because a guest has asked for a massage at short notice, so you learn to plan your day around likely bookings and work quickly between them. Your hands and back need looking after too, since you are lifting laundry and carrying trays as well as treating. Treatments often earn you a personal tip from guests, and good feedback on the massage side is one of the clearest ways to stand out in an interior team.

Questions crew ask

Do I need yacht experience or is a massage qualification enough?

A recognised massage diploma gets you noticed, but captains still want someone who can do steward work properly. A season of interior experience or a strong hotel background makes you far easier to place.

How many massages will I give a day?

On charter it is usually one to three treatments a day, depending on the guests. On a private trip with the owner it can be a few a week.

Do I bring my own massage table and products?

Most yachts have a table and a budget for oils and linen, but many therapists bring a portable table and favourite products for their first season. Ask the chief stew before you join.
