What the job is

You keep every screen, network and device on board working. On a large yacht that means the guest Wi-Fi, the crew network, satellite and 5G links, the owner's laptops and phones, cabin TVs, the music system, CCTV, and the bridge and engineering networks that sit behind them. When a guest cannot stream the match or the printer in the purser's office stops, you are the person who fixes it, quietly and quickly.

Most of the work is planned and unglamorous. You patch servers and switches, check backups, manage user accounts, label cables, update firmware on access points and keep an accurate inventory of every device. You also handle cyber security, which matters more each year: firewalls, segregated networks, password policy and the records that flag and class now expect under the ISM Code. Good documentation means the next engineer on rotation can pick up exactly where you left off.

The role sits in the engineering department and usually exists on yachts of 70m and above, where there is enough equipment to justify a dedicated technician under the AV/IT Officer or ETO. You work with every department: the bridge on navigation network faults, the interior on cabin control and guest devices, the galley on tablets and stock systems. Expect to be on call when guests are aboard, to wear uniform, and to speak to principals with discretion.

What makes a good one

  • Network setup and troubleshooting
  • Satellite and 5G connectivity
  • Cyber security practice
  • Calm, discreet guest manner
  • Clear technical documentation

A day in the life

  1. 07:00Check overnight monitoring: satellite and 5G link status, backup reports, UPS alarms and the network dashboard. Note anything that needs fixing before guests wake.
  2. 08:00Engineering morning meeting with the Chief Engineer and AV/IT Officer. Agree the day's jobs and which spaces you can work in while guests are on board.
  3. 09:00A guest's tablet will not connect to the cabin control app. You reset the device pairing in the stateroom while the interior team keeps the guest at breakfast.
  4. 10:30Guests go ashore by tender, so you push firmware updates to the crew area access points and log the work in the planned maintenance system.
  5. 12:30Crew lunch in the mess, then answer two crew requests about email on their phones.
  6. 14:00The bridge reports a chart update failing on one ECDIS workstation. You trace it to a dead switch port in the comms rack, re-patch it and record the fault.
  7. 16:00Set up an outdoor cinema on the sundeck with the interior team. Test the projector, sound and film library, then run a full rehearsal before sunset.
  8. 19:30On call during dinner. Bandwidth spikes as guests upload photos, so you adjust traffic priorities on the firewall and reset a cabin TV that froze.
  9. 22:30Final system checks, handover notes for the AV/IT Officer, and your radio stays on for any night calls.

Questions crew ask

Do I need yachting experience to get this job?

Not always. Strong shoreside IT experience, especially networking and AV, is what captains look for, but you still need STCW, an ENG1 and PDSD before you can join.

Do I need an MCA engineering ticket?

No. This is an IT role within the engineering department, so your IT certifications and experience matter far more than Y-series tickets.

Is the job permanent or rotational?

Both exist. Many large yachts run IT on rotation, such as two months on and two off, while others hire one permanent technician who works alongside the AV/IT Officer.
